Hello Colleagues,&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Some months ago following the 2007 National Leadership Summit for the Mathematics Education Excellence of Black Children, Carol Malloy and I embarked on a project to solicit manuscripts for a special edition of the Negro Educational Review that would feature submissions surrounding the focus of the summit. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We have several manuscripts that need to be reviewed. Good Morning &amp;#150;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Your name was forwarded to me as a resource for help in contacting possible presenters for our Saturday Mathematics Workshops. I have attached a brief overview of an ETS &amp;#150; Tennessee State University project entitled &amp;#150; Strengthening Instruction in Tennessee Elementary Schools: Focus on Mathematics (SITES-M). One component of the project is a series of Saturday Mathematics Workshop in Tennessee (Nashville, Jackson, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga) where K-4 elementary school teachers come together to &amp;#147;unwrap&amp;#148; TN standards for elementary school mathematics, learn to teach the standards and assess the standards within the classroom.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We are looking for experts in K-6 mathematics education to act as facilitators at the workshops and present the information in the format which ETS math specialists have put together. We are looking for dynamic facilitators who are familiar with the state standards and can convey the information to the audience in a lively, interactive manner. Our first workshop for the 2008-2009 school year is set to take place October, 18, 2008 in Memphis, TN &amp;#150; the topic will be geometry. I would appreciate it if you would recommend anyone you feel may meet these qualifications whereupon one of our math assessment specialists would contact him/her with detailed information about the workshop content.&lt;br /&gt;

If folks have not seen the final NMP report, it is attached. It is&lt;br /&gt;
interesting to note the move toward experimental studies of interventions&lt;br /&gt;
with African American students. It is also interesting to note?if my&lt;br /&gt;
reading of the references is correct?that not a single African American&lt;br /&gt;
math education scholar was cited. I also did a word search and &amp;#34;equity&amp;#34;&lt;br /&gt;
had zero hits. The section on social, emotional, and affective factors is&lt;br /&gt;
especially weak, with its emphasis on &amp;#34;math anxiety.&amp;#34; The chapter on&lt;br /&gt;
teachers and teacher education ignores everything that has been generated&lt;br /&gt;
about culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy. The chapter is merely a&lt;br /&gt;
commercial for one strand of research carried out, essentially, by one&lt;br /&gt;
researcher and colleagues. Surely, that is not the definitive word on&lt;br /&gt;
mathematics teaching and the preparation of mathematics teachers for&lt;br /&gt;
African American children. I'll mention one more interesting observation:&lt;br /&gt;
the simultaneous discussion of &amp;#34;low achievers&amp;#34; and &amp;#34;students with&lt;br /&gt;
disabilities.&amp;#34; If you can read that juxtaposition without hearkening back&lt;br /&gt;
to the work of Deutsch and associates in the 1960's, more power to you.&lt;br /&gt;
I'm assuming low-achievers is coded language and that advocating for&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;#34;explicit methods of instruction&amp;#34; (p. 48) will have interesting&lt;br /&gt;
implications for African American children. Scary, scary stuff. Clearly,&lt;br /&gt;
these are my opinions, but I encourage folks to read the report with a&lt;br /&gt;
critical eye and keeping the interests of black children at the forefront&lt;br /&gt;
of their thinking.&lt;br /&gt;

CONFERENCE THEME: Innovative Curriculums in Teacher Education&lt;br /&gt;

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Proposals are solicited on all topics regarding&lt;br /&gt;
teacher education and social justice, but especially encouraged are&lt;br /&gt;
proposals on the conference theme. Two types of proposals are solicited:&lt;br /&gt;
curriculum showcase and research presentation. Descriptions of the&lt;br /&gt;
