Hello Colleagues,

Some months ago following the 2007 National Leadership Summit for the Mathematics Education Excellence of Black Children, Carol Malloy and I embarked on a project to solicit manuscripts for a special edition of the Negro Educational Review that would feature submissions surrounding the focus of the summit.

We have several manuscripts that need to be reviewed. If you would like to review a manuscript for the special edition please contact me at lmatthews@gsu.edu or Carol at cmalloy@email.unc.edu. Reviewing represents a great opportunity for those seeking promotion and tenure. The deadline for reviewing manuscripts will be November 3, 2008.

Good Morning –

Your name was forwarded to me as a resource for help in contacting possible presenters for our Saturday Mathematics Workshops. I have attached a brief overview of an ETS – Tennessee State University project entitled – Strengthening Instruction in Tennessee Elementary Schools: Focus on Mathematics (SITES-M). One component of the project is a series of Saturday Mathematics Workshop in Tennessee (Nashville, Jackson, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga) where K-4 elementary school teachers come together to “unwrap” TN standards for elementary school mathematics, learn to teach the standards and assess the standards within the classroom.

We are looking for experts in K-6 mathematics education to act as facilitators at the workshops and present the information in the format which ETS math specialists have put together. We are looking for dynamic facilitators who are familiar with the state standards and can convey the information to the audience in a lively, interactive manner. Our first workshop for the 2008-2009 school year is set to take place October, 18, 2008 in Memphis, TN – the topic will be geometry. I would appreciate it if you would recommend anyone you feel may meet these qualifications whereupon one of our math assessment specialists would contact him/her with detailed information about the workshop content.

If folks have not seen the final NMP report, it is attached. It is
interesting to note the move toward experimental studies of interventions
with African American students. It is also interesting to note?if my
reading of the references is correct?that not a single African American
math education scholar was cited. I also did a word search and "equity"
had zero hits. The section on social, emotional, and affective factors is
especially weak, with its emphasis on "math anxiety." The chapter on
teachers and teacher education ignores everything that has been generated
about culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy. The chapter is merely a
commercial for one strand of research carried out, essentially, by one
researcher and colleagues. Surely, that is not the definitive word on
mathematics teaching and the preparation of mathematics teachers for
African American children. I'll mention one more interesting observation:
the simultaneous discussion of "low achievers" and "students with
disabilities." If you can read that juxtaposition without hearkening back
to the work of Deutsch and associates in the 1960's, more power to you.
I'm assuming low-achievers is coded language and that advocating for
"explicit methods of instruction" (p. 48) will have interesting
implications for African American children. Scary, scary stuff. Clearly,
these are my opinions, but I encourage folks to read the report with a
critical eye and keeping the interests of black children at the forefront
of their thinking.

BlackMathEd: New Journal of Urban Mathematics Education launched

On January 15, 2008, the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education (JUME) was launched by several mathematics education faculty at Georgia State University, Atlanta. The founding editors include Drs. Lou Edward Matthews (Editor-in-Chief), Pier Junor Clarke, Ollie Manley, Kezia McNeal, David Stinson, and Christine Thomas.

"Illuminating Urban Excellence"

JUME is a peer-reviewed, open-access, academic journal, the only one of its kind devoted entirely to the scholarship of mathematics education within the urban domain. JUME was created to open up a space for research that brings to the fore the strength and successes in urban communities, shedding light on the complexities of scholarship, teaching, and learning of mathematics.
Articles for the inaugural Fall/Winter 2008 issue will feature work from emerging and noted scholars whose research in the urban domain offers important and innovative contributions to the theory and practice of mathematics teaching, learning, and policy.

JUME's Advisory Board is comprised of noted national scholars in urban education: Drs. The focus of the special edition will be to highlight research, theory, and practice that have the potential to impact the current and future agendas for maximizing the success of Black children in mathematics in a variety of contexts.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW: What does it mean to prepare teachers to teach toward
social justice? Across the United States and around the world, educators
face many challenges. Especially troublesome are the economic, social, and
political contexts that make difficult our attempts to address differences
and oppressions in schools and society. Yet, in the face of these
challenges, teacher educators are continuing to produce significant
theories, practices, and coalitions. The 5th International Conference on
Teacher Education and Social Justice will offer rare opportunities to
discuss cutting-edge research, develop innovative resources, build
networks, and explore possibilities for new directions in teacher
preparation. The Conference draws together hundreds of educators from
around the world with diverse experiences but with shared commitments and
priorities.

CONFERENCE THEME: Innovative Curriculums in Teacher Education

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Proposals are solicited on all topics regarding
teacher education and social justice, but especially encouraged are
proposals on the conference theme. Two types of proposals are solicited:
curriculum showcase and research presentation. Descriptions of the
conference theme and procedures to submit a proposal are online
(http://antioppressiveeducation.org/2008conference.html). Deadline for
proposals: 31 March 2008.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION: All educators, researchers, and educational
leaders and advocates throughout the United States and the world and from
all levels and disciplines are invited to register. Participants are
responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and meals.
